Memento

A lot of my friends have been talking about Memento for years now but i'd never got round to watching it, but last night i saw it for the first time and loved it. I've been thinking a lot about my direction for camera film recently but watching this just turned my ideas on their head. I haven't seen such an original piece of story telling for a long time. The film plays backwards from the end to the start and is about a man with short term memory loss trying to find his wife's killer. Because of this there is constant suspense throughout with brilliant little subtleties and backwards explanations. It's another Christopher Nolan film that i have really enjoyed, i like the way he casts a lot of actors in nationalities foreign to their own but always gets a convincing performance from them.

Gnome

Recently in Web Design i have been creating animated banners. This has involved a painstaking process to try and embed the swf. files onto my blog, however ! With trial and error and help from people doing programming i can now show you this.... my Gnome.

Animation Presentation

My animation coursework is in for the 13th of December, the day after my birthday !! So I’ve got to get started with this. The brief is to produce an ident for channel 27. I have decided to build a street in 3DS Max and have someone in one of the houses flicking around the channels. The audio will be heard as the camera goes down the street, and possibly through alley-ways...etc.... until we go into a living room where the person turns on channel 27 causing his house to blow up. Here are some very rough, and quite crude plans.....

After this weeks animation lecture i have decided to look more into the cartoon area. I think i will have real problems trying to create a realistic enviroment, whereas if i go for a more make-believe street with strangely shaped houses it could prove to be more esthetically pleasing......
and obviously i won't just clone the same house twenty times !

My Hard Candy

My interpretation of this scene is not as tight as the actual version. In Hard Candy close ups are almost exclusively used whereas I have chosen some shots from behind the characters and also some tracking shots, which having seen the film, I now realised would have lost some tension. I included to tracking shots because I thought it might give a sense of causality to Haley's performance.

HC Floor Plan

HC Shooting Script

The Shooting Script :

1. Wide shot of Geoff alone in the room, tied to the chair.

2. Shot from over Geoff’s head as Haley calls him from the kitchen. This gives a feel for the size of the room and confirms Geoff is alone in it.

3. Tracking shot coming from the doorway towards Geoff as Haley asks about his medicine cabinet. (Walks in from the door as shown below.)

4. Medium shot of Geoff’s face. Showing to the audience he is confused.

5. Wide shot of Geoff and Haley, from the side, showing how Haley has all the power in the situation. Geoff is powerless.

6. Back to the second shot from over Geoff’s head as Haley walks out of the room to the kitchen. Haley is heard but not seen.

7. Keep that shot until Haley comes back into the room with the drink. As she feeds it to him cut to a shot from over Haley’s shoulder as Geoff eyes widen.

8. Close up, waist height, on Haley’s pocket as she pulls out the vial from her pocket.

9. Pan up as she brings it to her face and mocks concern.

10. Back to shot from behind Geoff as Haley leaves the room again.

11. Tracking shot of Haley going through the kitchen drawers. This is the first time we leave the living room area.

12. Cut back to medium shot in front of Geoff as he asks whether this is some “teenage joke”.

13. Back to medium shot of Haley as she answers.

14. Back to same medium of Geoff as he shouts to let him go.

15. Track Haley from the kitchen back into the living room to a medium shot of her asking if there is anything she should know about.

16. Shot from the open window area, looking back onto Haley and Geoff as Geoff screams for help.

17. Close up of Geoff screaming as Haley’s hand pulls his jaw down and shoots the chloraseptic down his throat.

18. Back to shot from over Geoff’s shoulder as Haley explains how none of his neighbours can hear him.

19. Medium side shot as she sprays him and threatens that next time it will be bleach.

Hard Candy Stills

Hard Candy Direction

Hard Candy is a film about the consequences of a coffee shop rendezvous between 14-year-old Haley and 32-year-old fashion photographer Jeff who have previously met only online in a chat room. The film tackles the touchy subject of paedophilia head on. Starting the film with a close up of a computer screen and the names ‘thonggirl’ and ‘lensman’ typing back and forth to each other sets up the film perfectly. Playing on the audience’s preconceptions and worries of online chatting creates an unstable atmosphere when the two do meet up in person. However, despite his enthusiasm in meeting a girl half his age, Jeff comes off as slightly awkward and shy. It’s Haley who is unnervingly upfront in her flirtation. The film touches on paedophilia, the relationships between adults and children and today’s Internet communication and its dangers. My chosen scene is half way through the film where the typical adult and teenager roles have been reversed where Haley is controlling the situation. When reading the script you are aware that Geoff has unruly intentions on Haley, and are drawn into their situation by Haley’s provocative actions and comments, but the film twists as Geoff passes out from the drugs Haley has slipped him. The scene is tense but also casual. Haley is very at home walking round Geoff’s apartment and very confident in her abilities to keep him tied up and get whatever she wants out of him.

The Real Hard Candy :

The location the director has chosen for Hard Candy is a lot like the one I imagined when reading the script. Geoff’s walls are a dark maroon colour, very warm and trendy. The kitchen unit in the house is stainless steal and very clear. The house looks like an Ikea advert. Expensive furniture, art hanging on the walls and very minimalist.

Actions :

When Haley walks into the room for the first time to meet the drugged Geoff she has placed a jumper or towel over his head, as she comes into the room she takes this off in a brisk fashion and starts up a casual conversation with Geoff. This is a great addition to the film as straight away when you see Geoff with the material over his head, and nothing he can do about it, you know he is not in control of this situation. Haley’s nonchalant way off pulling this off reveals to the audience that she is in control very quickly. Other than that the only other action in the scene is when Geoff tries to scream for help. There is a very fast paced piece when Haley reaches in to grab him very aggressively and sprays the chloraseptic down his throat.

Camera Movement :

Most of the scenes camera angles are close ups of the face or from waist height. I like the waist height angles because it gives you a perfect sense of Geoff’s vulnerability. The shots in level with Geoff’s face at sitting position so Haley is always looking over him. All the close ups of Haley’s face are never straight on, they are always looking up, even if it is just a slight angle. Again, portraying her as the one in a position of power. There is some camera movement in the film. Tracking shots as Haley walks casually around the house, or zooms into Geoff’s face as he slowly realises what is happening to him. As Haley sprays the chloraseptic the camera starts to move and shake very fast giving a real sense of confusion to the audience as you do not know what Haley is doing, or giving, to him.

Comparison :

Hard Candy sets up the film by starting with a shot of the computer screen with Geoff and Haley talking. They talk about meeting "this afternoon about 11ish", already by only seeing the computer screen text you know the scene is going to be set in the morning. When Geoff and Haley do meet for the first time it is in a cafĂ© with bright furniture and lots of bright windows, confirming the time and day. In the first half you are almost scared for Haley. She is obviously interested in this man who is saying all the right things to her and who is ultimately going to take her back to his apartment, albeit on her request. However, once Geoff is drugged the roles are switched and Geoff’s safety is now the audience’s main concern. Even when the drugs are starting to take effect on Geoff the audience is still confused because of Haley’s performance. She is worried for him and asking if he is OK and at one point even recoils from him when he raises his voice. The camera zooms in on Haley’s worried face as Geoff hits the floor and it is not until the shot is blurring out of focus that we see a tiny smirk on her face. From here on in the pace of every scene is decided by Haley. With Geoff helpless in the chair it is she who decides whether the scene is casual, intense or action based. The scene I have chosen to analyse is quite casual in pace until the point of Geoff’s cry for help. Later in the film things pick up in pace when Geoff escapes and a psychological and physical game of cat and mouse takes place around the house.

Evaluation :

I think my floor plan and shoot script was OK, but I think I need to learn more about keeping the audience asking questions and not revealing everything in the scene so early. The way DIRECTOR used close ups created suspense, whereas I showed the audience the whole room and Geoff tied up straight away. I also did not use enough shots, the film cut quite faster than I did.

Hard Candy Script

Hard Candy
Scene 24
Haley has successful drugged paedophile Geoff and has tied him up in his own house.

INT. LIVING ROOM – DAY

Where we find Geoff in one of his Aeron chairs – tied in. His wrists are lashed to the armrests, his ankles to the legs. He’s baffled, too groggy to understand what’s happened to him.

Haley : Did you call me ?

Geoff : Wha---

Haley : just looking through your medicine cabinet. Borrrrrring. No valley of the dolls stuff at all. Can’t help wondering, why all the lubricants.

Geoff : I----

Haley waits patiently, but he’s still too out of it.

Haley : You’ll tell me when your ready, I guess. Take your time

Geoff : Whaddid you--- ?

He shakes his head trying to get the blood flowing again

Haley : Remember what I said not drinking anything you didn’t see made yourself ? Good advice for everyone.

Geoff stares at her, wondering if he’s really saying what it sounds like. He flexes his arms, no slack. He tries to kick his legs free, no deal. But he’s still too zoned to understand why he can’t move…..

Haley : Sorry you were out for so long, I’ve never drugged anyone before.

She pulls a little vial out from her pants pocket, shows it to him in mock concern.

Haley : When I swiped this from my Dad it didn’t come with any directions. And I couldn’t very well ask him how much it would take to knock someone out, huh ? Then again, maybe I used more than I thought. Those screwdrivers could’ve affected my judgement, ya think ?

She smiles as if to say : silly me ! As she heads to the kitchen Geoff slowly comes around, his tongue still thick.

Geoff : don’t understand….

She pours him a glass of water from the tap and brings it over and carefully holds it to his mouth.

Haley : Have some water. It’ll help you come to. It’s real water, scouts honour.

His eyes widen as he drinks, realising how helpless he is, his adrenaline’s rising.

Geoff : This isn’t funny.

Haley : True. True.

Geoff : What the hell is this…. ?

Haley : Give me a moment, I want to look through the drawers over here.

KITCHEN

Haley goes into the kitchen, smoothly and casually opening the drawers and cabinets and sifting through their contents : batteries, baseball cards, pencils, real estate flyers and so on….

Haley : People keep the strangest things. (Off the baseball card) I mean why would anyone want to hang onto Albert Belle. (Off his silence) Some things can’t be explained.

Geoff : Is this some sort of teenage joke ?

Haley : Teenage ? yes. Joke ? No. (Looking at batteries) we have way too many triple A batteries at our house too. Why do they even make these ?

Geoff : Let me go. LET ME GO !

Haley : Patience. Patience. Just checking out this side of the house.

Track Haley past the front door back to

THE LIVING ROOM

Where she waves the lint in Geoff’s face.

Haley : Nothing in here I should know about is there ?

Geoff : what the fuck are you doing !?

Haley : that’s sort of been my question Geoff. What the fuck are you doing ? We’re in his house, filled with photos of half-naked teenage girls. (Sarcastically) None of whom you’ve EVER done it with !!

Geoff : (towards the window) HEEEEEELP !

But midyell, she grabs his jaw and shoots the chloraseptic down his throat and shoves the chair into the corner. As Geoff rolls into the wall, he’s gagging and choking.

Haley : No point in taking any risks, Geoff. Technically I could let you scream your brains out, nobody should really hear. I waited till today because (points to the north) Mr. Coughlan’s at work all day, (nods to south) and the Carranco’s are vacationing in Santa Barbara. Still (lifts chloraseptic) I don’t need some pedestrian to happen by just as your screaming. So keep quiet or….

She sprays a dash more chloraseptic in his face just to drive the point home and sets the bleach on the table…

Haley : Next time it’ll be the bleach
